Jonathan Samet, holder of the Flora L. Thornton Chair of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and Director of the USC Institue for Global Health, reached an international audience with messages about global health during two sessions at USC’s 2009 Global Conference in Taiwan. Held in Taipei on Oct. 29-31, the sold-out conference brought together leading experts in economics, energy, health and digital technology to examine current global challenges and explore the potential for change.  A widely carried Oct. 29 Reuters article featured research by assistant professor of preventive medicine Jaimie Davis which found that eating just a little more fiber could have a big impact in trimming belly fat among young people.

 USC enrolled more international students than any other American institution of higher education. according to the annual Open Doors report issued today by the Institute of International Education. USC hosted 7,482 international students in the 2008-09 academic year, according to the institute. New York University was listed in second place and Columbia University ranks third in the report.  STUDENT GRANT OPPORTUNITIES
The Institute is committed to supporting meaningful hands-on experiences for USC students interested in global health issues. The Institute currently has two granting mechanisms through which students who exemplify interest and promise in carrying out global health projects can secure funding: Global Health Research Immersion Grant and Global Health Action Grant.  CAMPUS CHALLENGE FOR STUDENTS!
The Just 50 Cents Campus Challenge is designed to give students like YOU the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by becoming a Student Ambassador and fighting the world’s most neglected tropical diseases. The campaign raises money to fight NTDs and give students an opportunity to win a four-week long paid internship with the Global Network in Washington, DC, plus $1,000 for housing, and the opportunity to share their experience on the Global Network blog. If the students raises over $5,000, the internship will include an all-expense paid trip to an NTD treatment site in Africa or Latin America! Enter as an individual or as a group.

 Paul Rockower, USC Public Diplomacy Master Student, is the creator and photographer of the first student exhibition featured at the Annenberg School for Communication. The exhibit titled The 21st Century Family of Man: Photography as Public Diplomacy
features moving images from Rockower's travels from around the world that capture the essence of global and cultural diplomacy through a lens of passion. Rockower will be traveling through Latin America over the winter break to continue to expand his photograph collection and realize the goal of visiting 50 countries before his 30th birthday... he only has 5 more to go!
